SPRING RECOMP 2021 - DAY 26
REST DAY

So this little yogini asks permission to join me on the elevator to the garage. Curious, I inquired why she would ask. Apparently some are demanding private elevator carriage.... after working out in an indoor, wide open, mask free gym...

My kids are concerned that I am on the cusp of becoming "that guy," publicly raging against the vast idiocies of the age. They are right to be wary. Stupid is everywhere you look. And just so we're crystal, I am not specifically indicting anyone's views here on FS. I love you guys. I mean all of it. The debates themselves.

And it does trigger me. I think I was taught, as a kid, to be triggered by stupid. To be intolerant of counterfactual narratives. To dig for the truth. To follow the money.... Pop.

And I must admit, that damn vibrator steering wheel did nearly put me over the edge.... If Lee Iacoca and three generations of Fords can manage to keep their fuckin hands off my steering wheel, I am pretty sure the Michigan MBAs can as well..

But I remain possessed of some restraint. As proof, I just deleted three perfectly lovely paragraphs on systemic cultural rot and consumer social theatre!! But what to do? Seriously. What's the best approach to dealing with the daily intrusion of madness?

One's natural tendencies bifourcate into adopting a war posture or STFU and caring for one's own. On a prior elevator ride, I had a conversation with a gentleman who removed his mask as soon as the elevator door closed and advised me that masks were bullshit. I pointed out that in current times, there are certain social risks in publicly proffering such a view. He advised me that he DGAF, was a Doc and front line worker, and understood the research. Also that they couldn't tell him shit about those "fake ass" vaccines. OK. Respect. But that's a guy who's adopted a war footing - exactly what the kids are rightly concerned about and not how I wish to be in the world.

That said, the STFU alternative strikes me as too passive.

The best non-neutral approach I can come up with is to actively reinforce anything positive, while remaining non-reactive in the face of divisive or negative provocation. That's going to take a little rewiring, but is the standard to which I aspire. To wit -

"Climb on board, baby! You can ride my elevator anytime!"

Vastly improved feels. Productive start to the week yesterday. Body's relatively happy atm. I'll take it!

Managed to have a good day under the bar yesterday, despite yet again perfectly timing my workout with weekly peak gym attendance. Got 10 X 195# on my squat; double target reps. Left a couple grinders in the bank. Proper wide grip this time, so no shoulder issues. 8 X 175 on my bench; 3 reps over, and more importantly, no pain. Pretty pleased with this, since I missed my bench by 3 reps last time... In pain. Incline, which is the most problematic for me at this point, looked to be a bust during warm up. Shoulder/bicep pain in full effect. Persisted and actually worked it out putting more weight on the bar. Somehow that cued the proper "bend" of the bar (upward with hard lat contraction) for a pain free press. Doubled target reps, don't recall exact (low) weight.

Sundays food orgy paid off!

Rewarded myself with ab supersets. Up to sets of 10 on the knee ups, so close to graduating to full leg ups. Hit the wall on the second plank around 50 seconds...

Looked OK in that perfect gym locker room lighting for a sec, then headed with the boys for the sushi bar. Then home to polish off the last pint of Chunky Monkey - 268k vs. 1200 for Ben and Jerry. Came in around 2800k. Teetering on the edge of dirty bulk...

Now on to make the most of my first properly pre-planned rest day!

Sun's out AF!

Let's go!

@shrew It is better. My truth is that my calorie budget is much higher on lift days, so I have conveniently adopted a "flex" approach and listen to my body. That means lifting every day so I can justify eating like a pig! Bad Jimmie!

You too huh? I just lift to support my eating habits. 😁😁 Great progress man. Workouts are on point. And as I believe it was bill engvall said u just can't fix stupid. A wise man once told me never argue with a fool someone may walk by and not know whose who... People gonna people. Keep crushing it man.

That's what my big sis (left of me in pic) & I used to do: Work out to justify eating our mom's great cooking. Now that Mama (May she & Dad R.I.P.) is gone, we're lost and nobody ever cooks like our Moms. We don't even cook like our mom. My sis almost cooks like our Mom, but not quite exactly. lol I luv Mr. Bill Engvall. My mom told me once not to ever argue w/a crazy/lunatic bc then there will be 2 crazies arguing. I believed this then, and I believe this now and so, I don't like to argue even though it is within my nature to be argumentative. I was destined to be a lawyer, but I didn't want an ulcer from arguing/debating so much like lawyers must w/ almost everyone. So, I chose Music/Health/Fitness instead. It's all good! :)

I have many opinions about many of these things. =) My first opinion is that the data clearly demonstrate masks, social distancing, and hand washing - individually and in conjunction - significantly decrease the spread of disease, and that CDC recommendations to carry on doing so in the face of vaccination efforts are well-founded (for now). My second is that the epidemiology of this virus is not particularly concerning. It is behaving the way many novel viruses do when introduced to an immunologically naive population. As far as respiratory coronaviruses go, this one is more severe than the mild coronaviruses that contribute to the "common cold," but exceedingly less severe than the coronaviruses that cause SARS (the original) and MERS (and in fact I thank my lucky stars every day that COVID is not MERS, or the global population would be in absolutely dire straits). My third opinion is that the mainstream media and politicians as a whole ought to be held responsible for their contributions to mental health decline over the past year. Anybody who has any sort of training in contingency planning and/or disaster/emergency response knows that the first thing one does is maintain calm. We have seen the opposite over the past year - the coverage has focused on death and chaos instead of examining the entire picture (concern without abject terror). I understand this from the media (fear sells), but from politicians it makes me suspicious. They HAVE been trained in contingency planning/disaster response, so what is their motive for inciting fear rather than calm?
