SPRING RECOMP 2021 - DAY 12
Lift Day - Squat, Row, Abs

I once saw an interview with a jazz legend whose name now escapes in which he discussed getting into flow state for performances. The gist of it was that performance is based on fundamentals, on ingrained technique and skill, not on being in any specific state. His ability to deliver a masterful performance was independent of his feels. Flow just happened, or most often, did not. Masterful performances were delivered regardless.

Is it not true that feels come and go like the weather? That our ability to perform is based in practiced skill? That how we feel is, in some sense, a lie?

Can we not, when all seems amiss or chaotic or futile, simply return to our breath, imagine the smallest possible forward step, and take it?

If my ability to get shit done is a practiced skill, independent of the side of the bed from which I awake, then what of how I feel?

Benched yesterday. Made my lifts. 8 X 165 flat. 10 X 115 incline. NO. BICEP. PAIN. Unbelievable. So unbelievable that my lifts and arm movements hitch where I expect the pain to be. I have been working the shoulder mobility a little, but the key adjustment seems to be "bending" the bar inward. I'll take it.

Back's a whole different story. Constant battle to keep it from seizing up. Stretched between every set. Clench core every time I stand up. Or move. Or fart. No twisting. Feels like just a matter of time before I am scrambling for a flexeril refill...

Timed my gym arrival to perfectly align with Monday's weekly apex of weight room usage. Skipped squats after waiting 45 minutes for a rack and tiring of watching 16 year old girls out squat me by 100#. Will get the timing better today.

Ate my main meal pre-workout, napped, hit gym. Only had a cup of Jimmie's own "anabolic" chunky monkey post workout. Still managed to launch the week with a 3000 calorie day.

Sun's not out, but it will be.

Be ready!

Flow State is real but not necessarily independent of practiced skill. It's a feeling of total immersion in your activity where you just "get it". It's the immersed feeling you might have had as a kid playing pickup game in the park, and you were so into it, you forgot about dinner. Lots of other examples ...
