Yeah I do this a lot. You might want to get into the habit of second guessing every time you eat. My mom said to cut out snacks which is when I do most of my "stress eating." Also, eating in front of the TV is a bad habit.

Yes Brigit. You mom is wise. Mindless eating is certainly one of my issues

I am an emotional eater too. A very extreme one. I realized it at 2013. Until then i though i just ate too much. Nowadays i have complete and immediate sense of the origin of my hunger. In fact i am never physical hungry. I always eat enough and more. I have learned how to eat, what, when and how much. But i let myself indulge to emotional eating just to the point of not getting derailed. And i do it every day. And yes, there are days that i do feel guilty but not to the point of giving up. And yes, there are days that i am scared of getting completely derailed. And this is how it goes for the last ten years.

I agree there is a distinction but...physical hunger can be sudden and it is does not have to involve deliberate choices and awareness of eating. When I'm truly hungry after hard physical work, I'll eat what is available to me, even if it is not the ideal choice. When I am hungry enough, there is nothing "patient" about my hunger, I urgently have to give my body fuel.

Liv, do you stick to a certain number of cals a day? One thing could be to not go above that number if that number is enough food? It seems low cal people always want to eat more most times. Idk. I don’t look at people food logs. I know you used to eat a high number and weigh very low!! That’s what I’m aiming to do.

@Tassos67. I like your comment. I hope to get to the bottom of my hunger as well. In addition to losing the weight I regained by overeating this fall this is my mission: Try to get to get a better understanding of it, Something manageable

@Oats... Yes I think you are right. Hunger is real and can be intense. I think one of my strategies may be to have some plain food available... like boiled eggs or liverpate... that I do like but that are in no way soul foods or treat foods

@Wifey... Calories... not really something I care too much about but I do watch trends...I eat pretty low calories when I lose weight and closer to goal as I am not trying to lose a lot I will take them up again... my understanding is that my body will use fat reserves if it needs, and I have fat reserves right now. But I do not want to starve so I eat enough to feel content... But yesterday was a different story

This is tough for me too. Somedays not hungry. The next keep looking for something else to eat. I should recognize that's emotional. Yes, need to be mindful. Good luck.

Thanks Meonadiet... I am sure we are many. And probably with slightly different reasons and patterns

If you do not care about calories then I have a question. Why do you care about how much you eat? I must be missing something here. I’m sorry. All I know is calories in calories out. And if I don’t have a number I don’t have a clue where I stand on it. So if calories don’t matter to you, what mattered about yesterday?

It is not the calories as such as the amount of foods. I guess that it is not that much of a difference between that but I am not trying to log activity and then log food and try to see what the balance is... I guess I am saying

I'm definitely a stress eater and a bored eater and any other emotion eater! I have to really be conscious of why I want to eat something. It's tricky to get control of...💜

Great post liv!! I’d only add “Eat till not hungry” is better than “Stop eating when full”. As a child of Great Depression parents, the former quote was used often but the latter is the essence of mindful consumption. Glad you’re back 👍👍

This is my problem too - is it hunger ..? Or is it boredom, stress, tiredness, etc ... it is so so important to know the difference. I am now reading books on the subject and learning: How To Eat Mindful. Since I think this is The Solution ✅ Good luck 🍀

So in my thinking and reading about this I came across the sentence " Eating makes us feel good so the brain has learned to make us hungry when we engage neural patterns that have historically been proximal to eating." That means that if we eat in front of the TV we will get hungry when we sit down in front of the TV. This is not exactly emotional hunger but it relates to my issue. When I am anxious I start eating late at night and soon I also start feeling hungry late at night and then this bad habit become hard to break even if the actual anxiety is dealt with... something to ponder
