Artemis Bane's Journal, 18 Mar 21

So the 7 day challenge was a success. I didn’t weigh in at my heaviest this month because I knew it was water weight from bloating during that time of month. But it was a solid 2lbs lost and 6lbs if you count the water weight.

The biggest help to get me moving outdoors is a GPS driven game on my phone called Run An Empire. It’s kinda like civilization. It essentially turns your neighborhood into a bunch of castles, forests, resource areas. Ruins with treasure chests... Etc

The map is a series of hexs. As don’t have to look at tour phone when walking. You just walk. Then you open your treasure chests, and craft from your resources, and build villages, and defend your castles.

It keeps you walking because in order to upgrade a hex, you have to physically walk to it on the map. You also defend your castles by physically walking to castles on the map.

Anyways. Great game. I highly recommend it if you like gamifying your exercise

Meant to say you open all of tour goodies when you get home. So in that way, it’s safer to just focus on your walk, instead of your screen.

Forgot to also add that it starts your civilization in the Stone Age. Eventually you work through the different ages until your at a point where you’re building rockets into space. And it’s free. There is a subscription option but I play for free. There are ads but it’s not too bad.

That sounds interesting, I have problems with motivation just to get out and moving so maybe the app will help.

You're doing great! How fun does that game sound. I never knew something like that existed. Thank you for sharing it with us. 😊

Where I live I'd be looking at my phone and a bear would be looking back at me. Think I'll just walk with my dog. It does sound fun though

@Sarafinia, you can start your walk or run and put your phone away. It tracks your GPS data to figure out where you've been.

It sounds like a fun game. Would it work if you were on a treadmill?

@LambiePi, I'm not sure if it works on a treadmill, there isn't an option for it when I looked. It tracks your GPS location data so it might not.

I’m going to start walking with neighbors next week, so it would probably work with that walk wink 😉

I think I’ll do a big post on games for exercise this weekend. I love working out if it’s fun and i’m a gamer so it’s natural for me to gamify my workouts. There are lots of ways to do this and I can point out the types of games/apps and my personal experience with them all.-----------------On to my responses! -----------------Wow thanks @Eidetiker for helping answer stuff. I’ve been so busy I haven’t had time to sit down until now. I really appreciate it!-----------------So for “Run An Empire” you don’t have to look at your phone. You simply hit START and then put it away into your pocket and walk like you normally do. You can also connect it to another app. The only app I see it connecting to though is STRAVA. So you could log in Strava and it records your walk in the game and gives you your treasures and upgrades your land hexes. BUT...I didn’t want yet another app for recording my exercises. I already use the Wyze band and it connects to Apple Health. It just records steps though and I can see the value in recording routes. But at this point, for me, I don’t need another app junking up my phone and routines.I just use the game itself and hit that Start button and put it in my pocket.-----------------This does not work on Treadmills. It’s unfortunate because I live in rural Washington and it rains 51 inches a year. I also have 16 acres in the middle of nowhere Washington and it rains 81 inches a year. So If I’m not wearing rain gear, I’m on my treadmill. LOL But I have other things I do on the treadmill to make it interesting. I’ll write up a post on how to make treadmills fun. I used to play games on the treadmill too but lately I’ve been watching virtual hiking and walking videos to pretend I’m outdoors. I put on my headphones with music and just go.

I downloaded RAE and I am using it as I am moving rocks. It's seems fairly easy to use. Thank you again for telling us about it. 👍😊

No problem 👍 We're all about helping each other out here. I'd love to see your reviews of the workout apps/games. I think this is probably the only way I will get motivated or excited to work out.

Yeah, I hear you. I get really easily bored with walking the same route over and over. Making a game of it is the only way to get me out there long term.
